Shoreline and Coastal Services
Throughout the historic highs and lows of our Great Lakes water levels, Miller Engineers & Scientists has been researching and responding to shoreline erosion, wave energy, public access needs, and health concerns related to nutrient loading and E. coli contamination due to both stormwater and biologic inputs. From minimizing closures at beaches during low water periods, to protecting inland investments during high water, our expert staff is known throughout the Great Lakes region as a leader in shoreline restoration and design services.
Coastal protection and restoration is critical when addressing infrastructure protection or recreational uses along our waterfronts. Miller Engineers & Scientists offers a wide range of services uniquely tailored to shoreline and coastal areas.

Revetment DesignAny existing structure that can’t be moved out of the way of advancing erosion is best protected for up to a few decades by an energy absorptive (not wave reflective!) revetment. Revetments can consist of local quarry stone or engineered concrete blocks of appropriate sizes that are arranged to adequate height, depth, and slope so as not to be over-topped or undermined. Wise design of revetments places them as far inland as is possible in order to minimize effects on the natural dynamics of the shore, preferably at or even somewhat inland of any historic erosion advance.

Beach RestorationDirect and indirect stormwater inputs, as well as accumulated chladophora and bird droppings, have significant negative impacts on water quality at public beaches. Miller Engineers & Scientists has provided naturalized design services for over 50 beaches throughout Wisconsin to improve water quality and reduce closures. Our designs focus on sustainable stormwater practices and use of native vegetation, minimizing maintenance costs for beach owners.
Post-construction sanitary surveys show a reduction in E. coli (the indicator bacteria that initiates closures) on beaches designed by our staff. |
Harbors and PiersOur staff has provided topographic and bathymetric surveying, geotechnical evaluations, stress and settlement analyses, and civil design services for various harbors, piers, and sea walls along Lake Michigan for the purpose of improving access and rehabilitating damaged/aged infrastructure. We have assisted boating clubs and municipalities in reducing safety hazards with both short-term "emergency" designs as well as long term rehabilitation and improvements.
